Parent Portal for Schools: What It Should Do
A parent portal only works if parents actually use it. That comes down to four things: it is easy to sign in, it covers every child, it works on a phone, and it shows the one thing parents care about — what do I owe, and how do my children do?
One login, however many children
A parent with three children should not need three passwords. In MSMS the parent is added once, and brothers and sisters are matched by email or phone number to the same parent. The dashboard opens with a family tree — the parent and each child with their class and any amount due — and a tap switches between children.
Easy sign-in
Let parents sign in with whatever they remember: username, email address or phone number. Choose how first passwords are issued (random or the phone number), print the credentials sheet, and decide whether new users must change their first password.
Fees, front and centre
The dashboard shows what is due and a tap opens Fee Status: each invoice, the balance and how to pay — online, by mobile money, or at the school office. If nothing is billed yet, the page says so and explains why.
Works on a phone
Most parents will use a phone. MSMS can be added to the home screen like an app, with no app store needed.
Roll out in four steps
- Add parents with their children (or import them from a spreadsheet with parent name, phone and email columns).
- Print the credentials sheet and send it home, or share first passwords by SMS.
- Announce the portal at a PTA meeting with a screenshot of the Fee Status page.
- Generate invoices — parents are alerted — and watch the first payments arrive.

Quick answers
Do parents need a separate login for each child?
No. One parent login shows all their children with a child switcher.
Can parents sign in with a phone number?
Yes — a parent can sign in with their username, email address or phone number.
