How to Collect School Fees with Mobile Money

In much of Africa, mobile money is how parents move money. Schools that make it easy to pay from a phone collect fees sooner. This guide covers the two ways to take mobile money — and how to keep the books straight.

Way 1 — Parents pay your mobile-money number

The parent sends the fee to the school's MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money or M-Pesa number and then submits the transaction reference in the app. You compare it with the money that arrived and confirm — one click records the payment against the right invoice and the parent's balance updates.

  • Pros: no gateway fee from the school's software, works for any network, simple to explain.
  • Cons: someone must check and confirm each payment — which is why MSMS lists each submitted payment for review, with the payer's phone, network and reference.

Way 2 — A payment gateway with wallet channels

Paystack and Flutterwave offer mobile-money channels on their checkout pages in the countries where they operate. The parent presses Pay in MSMS, completes the payment on the provider's page and returns. MSMS asks the provider whether that exact payment succeeded — right amount, right currency — before recording it. No manual confirmation is needed.

  • Pros: automatic, instant records, receipts.
  • Cons: the provider charges its own fee, and channel availability depends on your country and the provider.

Keep clean records

  1. Always tell parents which reference to use — the student's admission number works well.
  2. Put the payment instructions where parents look: MSMS has a How to pay card on the Fee Status page that you can edit in Settings.
  3. Confirm submitted payments daily so balances stay accurate.
  4. Use the outstanding-fees report before each term to chase balances.
Check which providers and currencies are supported in your country on their own websites — availability changes.

MSMS supports both ways, plus cash and bank transfers recorded at the office. See the full fee workflow.

Quick answers

Does MSMS support MTN MoMo?

Yes — parents can pay to your MTN MoMo number (and Telecel, AirtelTigo or M-Pesa) and you confirm in one click. Paystack and Flutterwave wallet channels also work where those providers offer them.

Is mobile-money payment automatic?

Gateway payments are verified and recorded automatically. Payments sent directly to your mobile-money number are confirmed by the school in one click.
